They’re grasping at straws again. How sad.

The Republican Senate spinmeister dujour, Sen. Rick Santorum of PA, held a press conference yesterday to announce to the world (or at least the portion of the world that actually gives a crap about his rantings), that “hundreds” of WMDs have been found in Iraq. Santorum, referring to rusting shells buried near the Iran border for well over 15 years, insisted, “Clearly, we went to war due to WMD. The contents of these shells are still hazardous potentially lethal, which qualifies them as WMD. Because, even if the shells, themselves, can't be fired, the contents remains hazardous and able to maim and kill - an effective WMD”

Never mind the fact that the defense department has already debunked the claim, stating, “these are not the WMD’s this country and the rest of the world believed Iraq had and not the WMD’s for which this country went to war.” Never mind the fact that Santorum was actually taken to task on this by none other than Faux News’ Alan Colmes. Colmes told the Senator “Senator, the Iraq Survey Group — let me go to the Duelfer Report — says that Iraq did not have the weapons our intelligence believed were there. And Jim Angle reported this for Fox News quotes a defense official who says these were pre-1991 weapons that could not have been fired as designed because they already been degraded.”

Still, Santorum defended his claims, flying in the face of the reality of the situation, which, given that we’re talking about Rick Santorum, should be no surprise to anyone. And the right wing bloggers have been coming to Santorum’s defense. They are absolutely giddy, thinking they have discovered the “holy grail” that will prop up their sagging house of cards. They are so desparate for this to be true that they are unwilling to face the reality that this administration lied to get us into a war of their chosing, to benefit their corporate masters and further their irrational ideology that the United States should be an empire, not a Republic.

In the end, this is just sad. It’s sad that we have a political party that is more interested in “winning” than being right. It’s sad that they are unwilling to let go of their fallacious claims, even in light of undisputable evidence to the contrary. It's sad that there are those willing to defend and support this ridiculous misadventure in Iraq, despite how obviously unjust, illegal and downright wrong it is. But what is most sad is that this is the party that is running our government right now, and running our country into the ground.

I've said it before, I'll say it again... Blindly following those that would lead you to your own destruction doesn't make you righteous, it simply makes you stupid.

I'll repeat the defense department quote:

“These are not the WMD’s this country and the rest of the world believed Iraq had and not the WMD’s for which this country went to war.”

Keep deluding yourself. It'll make it easier to take back the Senate and the House in November.

Thanks for your help.

Big Dog,

Just curious... which "first off" is the first off?

"stop at nothing to regain power"?? Try, stop at nothing to take back America for the American people.

Maybe you're into this corporatist ideology that Bushco and his cronies subscribe to. I'm not. And I would contend neither are the American people.

It is absolutely no surprise to me that they found remnants of old, degraded WMDs near the Iranian border. They are likely remnants from the Iraq-Iran war, and quite likely are of U.S. origin. Or did you forget that we were once supplying Hussein with WMDs.

Degraded WMD shells from over 15 years ago were not the picture painted by this administration in the lead up to the war. It's obvious to most, in light of what has happened since early 2003, that this was a war of choice, not of necessity.

Let me put it this way: Either Bush knew there weren't the WMDs that he touted, he went to war anyway, and as a result, 2500 of our armed forces are dead. Or, he made a terrible mistake, which he has never taken credit or apologized for, went to war based on bad intelligence, and as a result, 2500 of our armed forces are dead. Take your pick.

And let's not forget about the U.S. going from record surpluses to record deficits on his watch. Let's not forget that the price of gas has doubled on his watch. Let's not forget that "real" wages for Americans have gone down, every year of his administration. Let's not forget that interest rates and inflation are up on his watch. Let's not forget the debacle of a response to hurricane Katrina on his watch. Let's not forget of the outing of a covert CIA agent and an entire brass plate operation for political gain by his administration. Let's not forget how the goodwill of the world towards America was squandered on his watch. Shall I go on?

You bet I want the Dems. to regain power in this country. But not for the same reason the Republicans want to hold power - simply for the sake of holding power. I am interested in restoring the ideals that this country was founded upon, which a Republican summed up quite succinctly: "government of the people, by the people, and for the people." "Spin" that.

Oh, and BTW, don't quote me a floor speech made by Hillary in the immediate wake of 9/11, with ground zero still smoldering, based on the carefully filtered and spoon-fed intelligence provided by this admin. and somehow suggest that justifies supporting this ridiculous escapade in the light of everything we've seen and discovered SINCE 9/11. It is an insult to my intelligence, and a waste of your time.

the problem is that Santorum lies and Limbaugh and Co. swear to it. Twenty million listeners, mostly idiots, believe. How can we fight that?

What more is there to debate on this issue? It appears you and I will have to agree to disagree.

You can continue to listen to Rush and Hannity and drink the kool-aid, and I will continue to point out the truth in spite of this administration's lies and spin.

And yes, I know you don't see it that way, but you will in ten or twenty years when we are either living in a police state, or America wakes up and puts an end to neofascism in our country - at which point the stark truth of the abuses and crimes in this administration may finally come to light.

I'm just glad to see that the members of the Supreme Court remembered that they had a responsibility to fulfill yesterday. The only thing that would have made that victory for the American people sweeter is if Roberts hadn't recused himself. His vote wouldn't have changed the outcome after all. But that case is the subject of a separate discussion.

Big Dog,

Glad to see that you and I agree on this one.

You're probably right, this isssue is not over... the admin. will likely pressure Congress to give them additional authority.

The question then becomes, are we willing to legislate the violation of the Geneva Conventions by our government? Because that was one of the salient points of the Supreme Court ruling - "For the reasons that follow, we conclude that the military commission convened to try Hamdan lacks power to proceed because its structure and procedures violate both the UCMJ and the Geneva Conventions."

In effect, if the Congress passes legislation that gives the President the authority to convene such military tribunals for detainees such as Hamdan, we will be in violation of a treaty that we were a signatory to.

I'm going to have more on this on my blog post today - stay tuned.
